spider vein treatment

Spider veins are small dilated veins that are visible just underneath the surface of the skin.  Small spider veins are often asymptomatic and removal is considered a cosmetic procedure.  In some cases however, spider veins can cause pain, itchiness or a burning sensation.  Small areas can be treated by using our state-of-the-art laser equipment.  Larger areas are best treated with sclerotherapy, in which a substance (like Asclera) is injected into the vein and causes it to collapse and dissolve over the course of several days.  Reticular veins, similar to spider veins but  slightly larger in size, are treated in a similar fashion.  Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive and relatively painless procedure that can be performed in our office without the need for anesthesia, often in less than 30 minutes.  There is no down-time and patients can resume their usual activities soon after their treatment.

varicose vein treatment

Varicose veins result from damage of the valves of the larger veins in the leg.  Risk factors include pregnancy, obesity, poor circulation, prolonged standing, history of blood clots and current or previous hormone therapy such as birth control pills or peri-menopausal hormonal replacement.  Varicose veins can be painful, itchy or cause a burning sensation, in which case treatment is often considered medically necessary and  may be covered by insurance.  Foam sclerotherapy can be used for smaller varicose veins, while larger veins may require endovenous laser treatment or EVLT.  This is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed under local anesthesia in our office.  While there can be some mild discomfort during and after the procedure, treatment is generally well tolerated and patients are able to resume all activities after completion of the procedure..
